A result that does not add up

You are a first-year trainee working under supervision in a busy laboratory. While preparing a batch of results for authorisation you notice that one patient’s result is far outside the expected range and does not match the clinical details on the request form. Your supervisor is in a meeting for the next hour. A ward clerk telephones to say the clinical team is waiting for this result so they can decide on treatment.

How appropriate is each of the following responses to this situation?

  1. Response A: Tell the ward clerk the result is being checked, note the time, and ask the ward to contact the laboratory if the clinical picture changes while you wait.

    Rate Response A

Rate each response on its own. More than one can be appropriate.

  2. Response B: Release the result as it stands because the clinical team is waiting and they can decide for themselves whether it is plausible.

    Rate Response B
  3. Response C: Repeat the analysis on the same sample and check the sample identity and request details while you wait for your supervisor.

    Rate Response C
  4. Response D: Interrupt your supervisor’s meeting to ask what to do.

    Rate Response D
